What Procedures Can Help With Nipple Inversion?
I have noticed that my nipples are somewhat "inverted."
This is not new and the right is affected more than the left. They have
been this way for years and breast exams are negative for unusual lumps.
Is there any procedure that could be performed that would make them more
normal looking? Would this procedure leave a scar (if so, where?) and
would it interfere with breast feeding or sensation?
Thank you,
Dr. Bermant answers:
Inverted nipple surgery options depend on the actual deformity. Scars depend on the technique. I often use a small incision at the junction of the nipple and areola. You can see examples of typical scars here in the many before and after photographs on this site. Depending on the problem and technique used, there can be difficulty with breast feeding after inverted nipple surgery. Although there is risk of changed sensation, my patients have told me that sensation was normal after surgery.

Inverted Nipple Embarrassment and Nipple Piercing Options - Can Surgery Help After Piercing Nipples?
Dr. Bermant,
I wanted to ask you about inverted nipples. I suffer from having this embarrassment.
I have inverted nipples and a year ago decided to have them pierced. I started with hoops on the first piercing. It turned out they were both pierced improperly (the piercer had a hard time keeping them erect for the actual piercing and did not pierce far back enough). I had to have the hoops removed and I then opted for a horizontal piercing instead (using the barbell). I was determined to make this work.
This time it worked on my right, but on the left nipple, there are still signs of invertedness. The barbell is not as far back (again) as the other, therefore leaving room for the nipple to retract. I am considering my options now because I am unsure if I should "try" a third time with the piercing. I would very much like to have the left nipple corrected and match the other as much as possible. The right nipple is erect, and I couldn't be happier. And there are no signs of scar tissue from the first piercing at all on either.
Have you heard of any success stories with piercings? Is it too late to consider surgery?
I hope you can help or at least provide me with sound advice. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
Dr. Bermant answers:
For some, piercing seems to satisfy their concerns about inverted nipples. For others, they would rather have nipple inversion instead of pierced nipples. Sometimes the piercing works, at other times, it does not. The effectiveness depends on many factors. I do not offer piercing as an option.
For those who have tried nipple piercing and want to explore inverted nipple surgery options, tissues have to heal and soften before surgery can be considered. Some deformities from nipple piercing may make nipple sculpture difficult if not impossible. This is living tissue and blood supply is an important issue. We are glad to help patients explore their concerns during consultations after evaluations.

Inverted Nipples From Arizona - Great Web Site
Dear Dr. Bermant,
First I want to thank you for your web site, it's great and helped me to understand inverted nipples. I believe I have inverted nipples. I do not live anywhere close to Virginia, in fact I live in Arizona. I have been unsuccessful in my search for a plastic surgeon that does nipple inversion surgery and was wondering if you might be able to suggest a web site or give information of somebody that you are aware of that also performs nipple inversion surgery that is closer to where I live. Thanks for all your help.

Dr. Bermant answers:
Sorry we are not a referral service but do see patients from Arizona and around the world who prefer my sculpture skills. We do offer a preliminary remote package to start the process. We use information forms and standardized pictures to begin the process. All patients need an in office confirmatory examination before surgery. If interested, please call our office during normal office hours and ask for Jane, our office manager (804) 748-7737. She can explain the process.
Hope this helps,

Inverted Nipples Worse After Pregnancy - Coming To Virginia From New Jersey
Dear Dr. Bermant,
I have inverted nipples. Since I was a teenager I always had somewhat of a problem, but after having my daughter 18 years ago, the problem has continued to worsen. I am a young 50 year old, and I have found it quite bothersome in the past couple of years and I am now ready to do something about it. I found you on the web, and your credentials seem quite impressive. I live in New jersey, so I would have to get directions on how to get to your office. I vacation in December, and I would like to get it done that time if possible. If you need photos I will send. Thank you for your time...
Sincerely,
D

Proud Owner of Two Beautiful Inverted Nipples
Dear Dr. Bermant and others,
I'm a healthy, attractive 22 year old woman, the proud owner of two beautiful inverted nipples. My nipple shape has never negatively affected my sex life (in fact, my boyfriend rather enjoys them). I've played a semi-nude role in a play, I've done my fair share of streaking, and I've never felt self-conscious about my breasts.
I'd love for readers of your site to be reminded that inverted nipples are perfectly healthy, beautiful and much more common than you'd think.
Thanks,
C

Wife With One Inverted Nipple - How Much Will Surgery Cost?
Dear Sir,
My wife had inverted nipples before we had children. Now she has 1 nipple that is fine and the other that is inverted and damaged from breast feeding. Can you please tell me how much a nipple repair surgery will cost? We don’t have a lot of money but I am willing to work an extra job so that my wife will not feel so embarrassed.
K
Dr. Bermant answers:
Sometimes only one nipple is inverted. Cost of inverted nipple surgery depends on the problem to be treated. Jane is my office manager and can better discuss prices. She can normally be reached at our office by phone Monday - Friday 9-5 Eastern Time at (804) 748-7737.

Avid Runner With Inverted Nipples - Recovery Issues After Surgery
My name is A, and I have been interested in having recontructive surgery for my inverted nipples for the past eight years. I am an avid runner however, and scared that the constant friction caused by running might be painful to my nipples once they have been corrected. But I am so uncomfortable with the way my breasts look I really want to have something done as long as it doesn't permanently restrict my running.
Thank you,
A
Dr. Bermant answers:
Inverted nipple sculpture is surgery. Nerves can be injured with any surgery. Nerve recovery can result in hypersensitivity. This extra sensitivity, if it happens, is normally only a temporary problem. Performing activities has not typically been a problem for my patients after healing.
Hope this helps,
Michael Bermant, MD
