What Can Be Done To Correct Inverted Nipples?

I have a few questions. My friends and I were wondering what doctors can do to correct inverted nipples. how old do you have to be to have this procedure done? what are the risks? thank you

Dr. Bermant answers:

There are several surgical options to correct inverted nipples. It depends on the deformity and other factors. A parents consent would be necessary before the age of 18 in Virginia. For men, there are no issues about possible breast feeding. For women, the patient needs to be old enough to make an informed decision about the risks of breast feeding. For very young patients, I prefer to evaluate each patient individually and take a cautious "do not rush into a decision" approach.

3 Month Old Daughter With Inverted Nipples - What To Do and are Inverted Nipples Hereditary?

Dear Dr. Bermant

I have found in the internet that you are an expert on the question of inverted nipples. Would it be possible for you to answer us the following questions?

1. Our daughter, 3 months old, has got inverted nipples. Will they remain inverted or is there a chance that they will come up during her growth?

2. Are inverted nipples hereditary (my mother has got inverted nipples)?

3 months is a very early age to say if inverted nipples will be a problem. There is much to evolve in such a breast as it matures. I know of no study that has attempted to correlate inverted nipples with early appearance. There have been a report in the medical literature where inverted nipples can be inherited and run in a family.

Is Surgery OK for a 13 Year Old From Altoona With Inverted Nipples?

I have noticed that my nipples are inverted. I am 13 years old and i want to know if any chance that my nipples will remain this way forever by any chance will they come out since i'm still young? Is there anything i should do? I live in Altoona and i dont think there is any places where u can get this kind of surgery. Would it be ok for a 13year old to get this kind of surgery? I really dont want to have these kinds of nipples forever. Please e-mail me back if you could help me any

Breasts mature at different ages for different women. Nipple inversion can change as breasts evolve. Rushing to have surgery until breast fully mature may not be the best choice especially if the nipples correct on their own with breast growth.

15 Year Old Uncomfortable With Inverted Nipples

Hi I am 15 years old and my mother tells me that I have a case of inverted nipples...I am very involved in sports and activities and it makes me feel very uncomfortable when I am around people changing my clothes or showering...even when I am around my closests friends...I would like to know If you had any suggestions on what I should do....this is one of my biggest incicurities about myself and I just hate it so please if you have any suggestions or information please email me back

Inverted nipples can cause emotional stress for some. Sometimes understanding that they may go away on their own helps. Non-surgical techniques may give some relief. Waiting until the breasts mature and then having an evaluation will help you learn about your surgical options. An evaluation by your doctor may help ease your concerns.

17 Years Old and Somewhat Ashamed of Inverted Nipples - How Old For Surgery?

Dr. Bermant,

I was born with inverted nipples, and I've always been somewhat ashamed of it. I'm seventeen now, but I plan to have corrective surgery when I turn 18. I was wondering if there were any restrictions on age, if that would affect the surgery at all, and also, if I was to travel to Richmond to have a consellation and or surgery, how long would I need to stay there before I was able to fly back home, in terms of recooperation after surgery?

At your age this is an issue you must first discuss with your parents. If they agree, this site can be a starting point to learn about the problem and possible solutions. In Virginia at the age of 18, we are able to help you explore your concerns without first going through your parents. Age restrictions beyond that depend on the development of your breasts, degree of inversion, and plans for breast feeding.

Our patients are seen the day before surgery for a confirmatory consultation, if they have not had a prior in office consultation. If no sedation is used, patients can travel home the day of the operation. Follow-up depends on technique used and other factors we are glad to discuss once we know more about your problem.

17 Year Old With Self Esteem Issues Around Guys - How Do I Learn More About Surgery?

hello...my name is k and im am 17 years old. i was born with inverted nipples and it really brings my self esteem down when it comes to doing anything with guys. I'm not very shy but havin that makes me. Second of all...i can't wear certain types of bathing suits because they are thin and you are able to see right through them that my nipples are inverted and its embarassing. i dont know what to do and i thought there was no way to fix them and i had to live my life forever this way and that made me upset. Then i found your website and i became very interested. If its possible could you email me more information about your surgery? My nipples are inverted wen normal and pop out the majority of the time when they are stimulated or its cold. But not all the time. I have one more question...if i were to get this surgery would my nipples be hard all the time or would they be normal popped out when nothing is stimulating them and more so when something is? Thank you for your time! If anything i may have said was confusing im sorry.

In some degrees of inverted nipple, the problem disappears when the nipple muscles become active. When the muscles relax, the inversion returns. Typically the muscle action remains after surgery. The degree that the nipples stick out after surgery depends on the original problem, surgical techniques, how you heal, and muscle function after surgery.
