Contour problems rarely stop in the front but continue around the sides and to the back. The extent of surgery stops at some point. As tissues fold during tummy tuck surgery, there is a transition zone along the sides.

Picture of tumescent tummy tuck surgery with liposuctionLiposuction contouring can help with this side transition zone. In this picture, Dr. Bermant is using liposuction to sculpt the flanks and remove some of the fat excess here. There are limitations and risks with this liposuction. The blood supply for the flap of tissue in the front is no longer connected along the front middle. Such vessels only stretch so far and so the lowest vessels often need to be divided for the tissues to move large distances. This lowest central tissue depends on blood supply from the sides. Liposuction along the flanks can injure the blood supply.

Each patient is different and such issues are best explored during a consultation after better understanding the specific contour problems and concerns.

Skin closure is the final part of the tummy tuck surgery. To minimize scars, Dr. Bermant closes the deeper tissue such that there is no tension on the most superficial layers.
