Weight loss can be wonderful, but the skin does not always shrink. Loose redundant tissues like this about the abdomen can be uncomfortable, make it difficult to keep clean, and a problem to find clothing. Rashes may develop under the apron of flesh. This patient lost over 100 pounds and had a stable weight of 140 pounds for the past 3 years.

Excess skin issues in massive weight loss patients can extend around the entire body. This is a three dimensional problem. Extra tissue can hang about the abdomen, back, thighs, and other parts of the body. This 38 year old female patient decided to have an abdominoplasty surgery with a tightening of her rectus abdominal wall muscles. The body contouring operation was done with our 23 hour ambulatory package and she was home the day after surgery. Her limited hospitalization permitted progressive activities with nursing assistance until she and her family felt more comfortable on her own. |
See how this surgery tightened the loose folds of tissues and sculptured her front nicely. Another option would have been to tighten the skin around the entire body in one stage - a body lift. This is much more extensive surgery, has greater risks, and requires extended hospitalization. A third option would be to tighten the redundant skin in the back at a second stage. A thigh lift would manage the extra tissue inside her legs.

When a patient compromises with less extensive surgery, a transition zone exists between the operated area and untreated regions. See more images of this patient's results.
