Eyelid Reconstruction

Cancer of the eyelid has special concerns. The eyelid must still protect the eye itself. Drainage structures must remove the lubricating fluids or the tears will overflow over the cheek. The cancer was removed with Modified Mohs' surgery with frozen section analysis of margins. Once the cancer was removed the defect was repaired with a full thickness skin graft. The cancer did not extend deep enough to involve the tear duct systems located just under this cancer.

Reconstruction

30 months after surgery
skin graft Bermant plastic surgery3 The full thickness skin graft came from behind the ear. This thin skin was used because of the close match in color and thickness to the skin of the defect.

Smaller eyelid cancer was treated to modified Mohs' surgery and reconstruction with local flap. The reconstruction was designed to pull skin laterally and not cause an ectropion (eyelid pulling away from eye).

If the skin is pulled away from the eye an ectropion may result and leave the eye less protected.
