The male areola / nipple complex can be stretched out by fat and or gland causing "big nips," "puffed nips," "large nipples," and enlarged areola. When skin and areola are stretched by underlying tissue, removing that tissue can result in smaller areola. Just how well the surface tissue shrinks depends on many factors that are hard to predict. An additional problem in talking about size is that there are muscles just under the skin that can flatten the areola when stimulated or cold. (That is why Dr. Bermant prefers to examine his gynecomastia patients in a warm room and include room temperature as part of his measurements.)
