Complication of Huge Areola After Donut Mastopexy by Another Surgeon
This Australian male patient lost 69 pounds and went from 196 pounds to 128 through dieting and exercise. He had loose skin of the chest, abdomen, and arms. Seven months before in Australia, he had a donut mastopexy to tighten the chest skin, a brachioplasty to tighten the arm skin, and a tummy tuck to tighten the stomach skin. The patient said that his areola were huge the first he saw them shortly after surgery. He said that his areola size had remained the same since surgery. He complained that the very large areola have been embarrassing restricting his social activity forcing him to wear extra layers of clothing, thicker clothing, and keep his chest covered. He did not even wear light colored shirts afraid that the enlarged areola would show through.
Tightening chest skin can be done by removing excess skin. The areola is a natural place to hide a scar in the transition between normal chest skin and the pigmented areola / nipple. A Donut Mastopexy is surgical sculpture where a circle of skin is removed around the areola. The large circle is then cheated together into the smaller circle. The forces pulling the chest skin into the smaller circle also pull the areola larger. His Australian surgeon did not provide a strong enough counter force to keep the areola a normal size.
