Nasal Hump Deformity
Bouchardon's Pope Clement XII has a typical nasal dorsal hump. Although you cannot really be certain, this deformity of the nose is typical of one not from trauma. There is a slight droop of the nasal tip consistent with the aging face, but not to the degree of those men from Reuben's Crowning of Mirtillo. The computer simulation of a rhinoplasty has reduced the dorsal hump and slightly elevated the tip. This degree of dorsal hump reduction would probably need removing some of the extra bone and cartilage with a rasp. The nasal bones also would need to be altered (osteotomy). The nasal bones form a triangle supporting the skin. Leaving the angle unchanged and removing a large dorsal hump would leave a / | \ flat space on the top. By changing the angle /|\ the two tops are brought together restoring a natural shape to the top. See clinical cases and further information in rhinoplasty nasal hump surgery. Although the Pope could have his skin returned to more youthful proportions with a facelift and blepharoplasty, neither these operations nor the rhinoplasty were available in his day.
