Nasal reconstruction is better undertaken with a model to follow. While reconstructive techniques are not accurate enough to promise what a nose will look like, I like to have a goal to strive for. The rebuilt nose on the human face is either flaps and grafts of flesh or a nasal prosthesis. The Sphinx at Giza lost its nose in the 14th century. No photographs exist what the nose looked like. Now just what nose did this statue have? Was it like other Egyptian statues? Just what did a Pharaoh's nose look like? Until recently this was a matter for sheer speculation. In my studies what type of nose to rebuild for this statue, I searched the web for ideas. The sphinx was supposedly built by Kafre, notice how this statue has similar facial features. Each ancient Egyptian statue and drawing has a nose that rarely resembles the features commonly seen on people of this region. There is the broad flat nose typical of the black ethnic nose. And there is the modern Arabic nose with a prominent dorsal hump and drooping tip. Were the pharaoh's noses different? See my reconstructions of the Spinx.
Mummies have revealed much about the faces of the ancient pharaohs. New Axial Computer Assisted Tomography (CAT scans) have probed many wrapped mummies. On the right is an image of Ramses II and the left if one of his statues. Notice that the nose and major facial features have little in common. The statue's nose looks little like the Arab or black ethnic noses. Yet the mummy nose has many of the features commonly found in the Arab nose. There is a major dorsal hump and possible drooping tip. Was there an ancient convention for the stylized nasal portrait? Are these an early version of a rhinoplasty - nasal surgery before the surgery was possible? Investigate different noses for the Sphinx
Explore the web for the nose of the mummy using advanced medical techniques: I "reconstructed" the nose on the computer. In real life the problem would have been much harder. See a case where I used a patient's forehead to rebuild a similar deformity (forehead flap nasal reconstruction). See an actual case of dorsal hump reduction and explore what rhinoplasty has to offer.
