Subj: Re: Liposuction
Thank you for your prompt response Dr. I will keep you informed
of my progress as I lose weight. I gather from the response you gave me,
that since fat was removed from the areas where I was predisposed to gaining
weight, that is the reason why I gained weight in the places where I didn't
have lipo done, and where I would not previously have gained weight. And
hopefully, when I lose this weight, the lipoed areas will still be much
smaller than they were before-Whew!!! I feel better, now that I know that
I won't have to go through the surgery again-not that I would-I coudn't
afford it!
thanks again Dr.
Dr. Bermant responds:
Although that would be nice, weight loss may or may not follow the pattern that it is put on.

Subj: Re: liposuction & cellulite
I have made an initial visit with a plastic surgeon regarding liposuction on my upper leg area, a problem I've had for years. I understand that liposuction will not get rid of cellulite but can liposuction reduce the appearance of cellulite a bit? Could it be that what I think is cellulite actually just be the fat accumulation and looseness of skin? I used to do a lot of heavy duty bicycling several years ago and had toned, shapelier legs; now I'm not as active and the "muscle has turned to fat!"
I'd just like your comments. Thanks, and I have enjoyed reading your answers.

Dr. Bermant responds:
These questions are better directed to someone who has examined you. In general, liposuction does not help cellulite.

Subj: Re: Bell Bottom Blues
Although I am not looking for a alternative to exercising and eatting right, I am utterly exhausted trying to bring down my big hips. I hate them. I am forty years old and would love to stop hiding myself under jackets. The rest of me looks really nice except for my big bottom. I need to know the risks and how even my legs will look after the procedure. I want to know all the cosmetic risks including health risks. Hoping this will work for me. Please respond.
Thank you.
Dr. Bermant responds:
"Large hips" can be a problem for either a liposuction for localized fat or more extensive surgery to handle redundant fat and skin. The information you request is discussed during an in office consultation. We have an extensive discussion about the risks, benefits, and alternate methods of care as part of the dynamic education process of our office visits. An email request does not give me enough specific information that an examination and medical history provide.

Subj: Re: Liposuction
Dear Dr.
I am a 46yr old female. I have wanted for a very long time to have liposuction. The problem is, my mother and husband think it is to dangerous.
Every time I consider having it done they wil talk me out of it. Would you please educate them so, that they will know it is not as dangerous as they think. I realize that any surgery can have complication.
I want to have this done like yesterday. I want to have my stomach done. Iv'e done alot of research on the internet and I am convinced that I would make good a candidate for this surgery. I would be very graceful if you would answer my e-mail back.
Thank You
C
Dr. Bermant responds:
Liposuction does have its risks and benefits. Such an extended conversation belongs in the in office setting. We encourage those with family having such concerns to be part of the office educational experience. I cannot discuss the risks of the surgery being done by another surgeon, if not trained well enough in liposuction, the surgery can be very dangerous. Many people are trying to do liposuction surgery with minimal or no training. When liposuction is done in a cavalier fashion many complications are much more frequent. Liposculpture done with reasonable care by well trained individuals carries much lower risks.

Subj: Re: Liposuction
Hello,
I am interested in finding out about Liposuction of the abdominal area.
the whole mid section of my body. I am not a fat man, but I was at one
time a very chunky man. Try as I may I can not loose what I still call
my baby fat, a thin layer of flabby tissue about 2 inches thick to muscle
that I believe I can feel under the layer. I would like to find out about
procedures and cost of abdominal liposuction and payment plans.
Thank you
A / San Diego, Ca
Dr. Bermant responds:
Many people cannot remove a localized collection of fat as you describe. To answer many questions like your own, I have posted several new pages on my website about liposuction. Cost for a single zone and the surgeon's fee can be found here. Additional charges may apply depending on what type of anesthesia, location of the surgery and other factors.

Subj: Re: liposuction
Do insurance companies - specifically Trigon Key Advantage - ever pay for abdominal liposuction?
Dr. Bermant responds:
Not that I am aware of.

Subj: Re: Liposuction
Hi! I am interested in having liposuction with the ultasonic tumescent technique to reduce the fat in my stomach and hip area. I am in good shape except for the pouch but I am concerned about the post-surgery recovery. I have a very demanding job and rarely have time off of work. If I had the procedure done late in the week (Thursday or Friday) would I be able to return to work on Monday? Also, I heard this procedure will cause severe bruising . Is this true and if so how long does the brusing usually last? Thanks!
Dr. Bermant responds:
The tumescent liposuction technique does lessen the amount of bruising - but bruising and swelling still occur. Ultrasonic liposuction has its definite advantages for certain fibrous zones but the abdomen and hip region do not necessarily benefit from this technique (it is easier -less work - for me in the operating room). Return to work depends on the extent of surgery, the type of work, AND your nature of healing. A demanding job that requires thinking rather than physical activity is easier to return to after such surgery. The effects of anesthesia have worn off by the second to third day. A minimal liposuction may permit a return with garment and some activities in a few days. This time period sounds just too short for an average liposuction and physically demanding job. I suggest that my patients build a bigger buffer into their schedules.
The extend of bruising depends also on what problems are being treated, how it is done, and your own nature to dissolve blood in your tissues.

Subj: Re: tummy tuck/lipo
I am a 35 year old mom of 3 wonderful kids. 2 years ago I underwent liposuction to my hips, thighs and stomach. Along with that I had a tummy tuck. Since the surgery I lost 15lbs. I felt pretty good about the surgery at first but have been noticing over the past year that by thighs still appear to have a biggness to them and my stomach still has a lot of excess skin. I know my stomach doesn't look as bad as it did,,,,, but is it normal for it to still be loose? As far as my legs, I don't understand why they don't look better than they do.
Would you recommend getting another tummy tuck to get rid of all the excess skin?
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
M
Dr. Bermant responds:
Tummy tuck surgery can tighten the skin to various degrees. Extensive tightening can leave a patient bent over for a few days until they skin loosens. Relaxation of the skin after any tightening is natural. Weight reduction can lead to greater loosening. A secondary skin reduction can be necessary but is not common. A mini-tuck may do the trick in some cases. Without an examination and evaluation I cannot comment on your case.

Subj: Re: Re: tummy tuck/lipo
Thanks so much for your reply. My question has been answered but I do have another question. What is a mini-tuck and what are the procedures for this surgery? Also, I had asked about my thighs an why they don't look any better after liposuction and losing weight. What do you think causes that?
I appreciate your time!
M
Dr. Bermant responds:
A mini- tummy tuck is a smaller version of the tummy tuck abdominoplasty that is much less extensive in the undermining and how much it can correct. This type of surgery is for the patient who has a much smaller amount of redundant skin to remove. The limited operation is not as effective as a full abdominodermatolipectomy, but for some patients they do not need that much surgery.
I cannot comment on your case since I have not examined you.

Subj: Re: lipo recovery time
I am a 32 year old female. I'm not overweight, but, have the typical problem area - tummy. I also want to have lipo on my upper arms and on my back.
I live in Jacksonville, FL. My question is regarding recovery time. What is a REALISTIC expectation for recovery time in terms of wearing the compression garments, swelling and bruising. My concern is that I will be unable to wear sleeveless tops or go to the pool or beach for weeks/months after the procedure. I would like an honest answer so that I can plan my surgery at the best possible time.
Thanks,
k.r.
Dr. Bermant responds:
Time of bruising is a function of what is done, who does the surgery, and your own body's normal rate for getting rid of your bruises. Tumescent Liposuction has a lower overall bleeding as does less extensive surgery. I can give my own patients a better estimate once I see what their 3 dimensional problem is that I will be resculpting and discuss some factors that influence bruising. Some people have certain factors that increase their chances of bleeding. Others take much longer until their bruising resolves. The best way to learn the specifics you request is with an in office consultation.

Subj: Re: Re: Re: tummy tuck/lipo
Dr. Bermant, Just to let you know..... from what you described on the mini tuck......it sounds like that is what I had. My doctor had explained to me what he was going to do and after it was done... it wasn't the same. The only incision he made was at the bikini line. When we discussed the surgery, he said he was going to do a "U" incision hoping to pull everything in. After all was done, he ended up not doing it leaving excess skins on the sides. I'm hesitant in saying anything about it but I'm frustrated that what I was told was going to happen, never happened.
What would you recommend?
M

I cannot recommend anything without an examination and evaluation.
