Subj: Re: male liposuction

Dr. Bermant,

I am curious. I seem to have alot of fat around my penis. Just above it, that is causing me to loose at least 2 inches of my penis to the fat around it. I dont think it is because I am overweight. I am slightly overweight by 10 lbs. I weigh 192 and I am 5'10. Also my fingers are are thick. I was overweight when I was in my teens. Can lyposuction fix this problem?
Thanks,
C

Dr. Bermant responds:

Liposuction can be used in many cases of localized fat collection. In some males localized fat of the lower abdomen can be unsightly. If the extra tissue is both fat AND SKIN, then some form of abdominodermatolipectomy (tummy tuck or minitummy tuck) may be more appropriate. I cannot comment about your case without an examination and evaluation.

I hope this information proves of some use. If my office can be of further assistance, please let us know. We can be reached at: (804) 748-7737. My staff and I try to ensure the comfort of our out of town guests during their consultations and procedures.

Subj: Re: Re: male liposuction

Can you tell me an approximate cost for such operation? Also, if insurance doesnt cover the operation, could I make payments?

Thanks

Dr. Bermant responds:

It depends on what needs to be done and how it is done. Liposuction of one zone prices can be found here. Abdominodermatolipectomy (tummy tuck) prices can be found here. The best way to learn what plastic surgery has to offer is during an in office consultation. Once the problem and suggested method of care have been defined, we can give the exact price.

Thanks for your information. I live in the Richmond area, so maybe near the end of next year I will come to your office for a consultation about this. Right now, I can't afford the operation.

Subj: Re: body sculpture

Dear Dr.

I am a healthy 30 year-old female interested in possibly body sculpting, liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a face lift. Playing sports every day, I am athletic, but muscular. Unintentionally, I have gained 50 lbs in the last 2 years. (30 lbs of this was left-over weight after my pregnancy 6 months ago.) I now weigh 180 with fat deposits all over my muscular body. I still try to exercise every day, but diets don't work, and the fat isn't coming off; I just keep building more muscle and getting bigger. I am committed to controlling my caloric intake in order to keep the weight off after surgery, but I need help getting rid of the fat. Would you please respond to the following questions.

1. In liposuction, can a heavy build-up of muscles be removed along with fat?

2. Body sculpting, liposuction, a tummy tuck, and a facelift? How much of this could be done at one time?

3. Would you give me a general idea of the prices involved for each of the procedures, and the savings if multiple procedures were done at once?

4.If any, what is the fee for the initial interview and consultation?

5. Do you know how any of this might be made more affordable by an HMO like Trigon Healthkeepers?

Dr. Bermant responds:

Liposuction is for localized fat, not muscles. We do not remove extra muscles with body sculpture. Sometimes operations can be combined. It depends on what needs to be done. The extent of surgery is best determined during an in office consultation. Liposuction prices depend on what needs to be done. Call our office for greater details, however without knowing what needs to be done, prices are not easy to determine. Cosmetic surgery is usually not a covered benefit by most HMO's.

Subj: Re: liposuction

3 weeks ago I had liposuction on my inner and outer thighs. Since that time I have had fluid retention or build-up just above my outer knee on both legs. I have had to have them drained twice in the last two weeks and will be going in tomarrow to have them drained again. The amount of fluid seems to be increasing instead of decreasing.

My question is why is this occuring? How long will it take until the fluid build-up stops? Could this be a long-term or a permanent condition?

Thank you in advance for your response.

Dr. Bermant responds:

I have not see this problem with my patients and their liposuction surgery. Fluid collection can be from several possible problems that are better discussed by your doctor (who should have a better knowledge about your case). Theoretical concerns include blockage of the lymph drainage system and infection. There are other possibilities. Time for resolution depends on what is wrong and how it is treated.

Complications can be minimized by using a doctor well trained in such techniques. Was your doctor board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons? Not all doctors who call themselves "plastic surgeons" have the same training.

Subj: Re: liposuction cost

Hello Dr Bermant...

I have a sort of thick "apron" of sub-q fat running along the whole front of my abdomen from just under my bust to my navel. It iseems to be the first place fat is added and the last from which it is lost - I am rather thin, otherwise, and in fact could bear to regain a few pounds, if the "apron" were eliminated as a deposition site.

As I appear unable to eliminate or even significantly reduce this unsightly fatty "apron" on my own, despite regular exercise on a stair machine and a low-carb diet, I am considering tumescent liposuction as a permanent solution. I really want to be rid of that "apron" permanently.

I'm nearly 58, in good health, a non-smoker, and appear to have good skin elasticity. I would strongly prefer to be awake for the procedure, with minimal effective pain meds, and would also strongly prefer to have a larger number of careful cannula-insertion scars afterward rather than a smaller number but incomplete or uneven elimination of the fatty mass.

Could you give me a comprehensive cost estimate for this? Is this something that normally could be done in a day trip from Boston, i.e., down in the morning, back in the evening?

Thank you!

regards,
M

Dr. Bermant responds:

Liposuction can be a minimal operation or major surgery. In a small individual with little extra fat some surgeons may let them travel that day, but even in these cases we prefer our patients to stay in Richmond AT LEAST overnight. In larger patients, traveling back that day is not safe. We prefer a safer more conservative method.

Some patients think they need liposuction really have extra fat AND SKIN. Liposuction will not take care of redundant extra skin. Risks, benefits, and alternate methods of care are best discussed during an in office consultation and evaluation. For our out of town patients this consultation can be coordinated one or two days before a preplanned surgery date. We prefer some information about such patients before their visits to minimize disappointments and maximize the patient's education. Even with pre visit information, some patients are not good candidates for such surgery (found during the consultation and in office examination).

Price depends on what is to be done. My surgeon's fee per zone of liposuction can be found here. Operating room fees depend on where the surgery is to be performed please call our office for further details and local accommodations.

Subj: Re: liposuction

Doctor,

Please listen to what i am going to say. I think about losing weight all the time. i can never get it off my mind. the more i try to lose weight the more i gain. I am diagnosed with Clinical depression and sometime i eat away my problems. i have so much fat on me and i want it gone.. i want to start out new with less fat and see if i can keep it that way.... I know i can't lose weight.. i exercise by walking regularly but it doesn't help... Could a lyposuction give me what i want? Thanks for your time.

Thanks,
J>

Dr. Bermant responds:

Liposuction is not for weight loss nor weight control. Suction lipectomy is for localized fat deposits. A positive caloric balance will keep adding weight on after liposuction.

Subj: Re: liposuction

Hi,

I am considering undergoing liposuction. I am female and I would like to know if it's possible to remove fat from the area just below the abdomen and above the sexual organ. (I don't know what it's called)

Another question is can I go home by myself after surgery or at least take a cab. Is was told that riding their limousine is better than riding a cab. I'm not sure if they're just making money while I can really take a cab or drive.

I would appreciate it if you could get back to me on this. Thanks.

I

Dr. Bermant responds:

The region just below the lower abdomen is called the mons pubis. In some cases it can be redundant with either just extra fat, in others both fat and skin. When only extra fat is the problem, liposuction may be an option. When fat and skin are the problem, then variations of an abdominodermatolipectomy (tummy tuck) need to be explored. The best way to learn about options for you, is during an examination and evaluation.

I do not have an answer to the question about the difference between a cab and limo.

Subj: Re: Re: Lypo-suction

Dear Dr. Michael Bermant,

I am 39 - 5' 4" - and weigh 216 lbs. approx. Today I visited a doctor here in Canada who showed me some pictures and discussed lypo-suction with me. He quoted me US$ 5,000.00 for tummy, hips and buttock. I have a weight problem and He has assured me drastic results as much as 3 dress sizes in reduction.

I have no idea how much weight I will loose, I realize it is not a weight loss reduction answer to my prayers. However if I can remove the fat in those areas I will feel better about myself. After reading some of your responses I am debating whether lypo-suction is for me.

I would be prepared to fly to the U.S. to get help with my weight loss. Without seeing me can you advise as to whether this procedure is right for me. After 90 days this doctor recommends doing the thighs, for another US$ 3,000.00.

I am not convinced that US$ 8,000 later I will have a new body. Please respond. Thanks,
T

Dr. Bermant responds:

Your doctor has the distinct advantage of having examined you. However your statement of "drastic results and "3 dress sizes in reduction" just seem a bit much. I never encourage my patients to feel that liposuction will give them a "new body" but rather improving some of the proportional relationships. Liposuction is not the answer to weight problems. Massive liposuction can be done but has much greater risks involved and usually mandates hospital stay to monitor major fluid shifts. Dividing an extended operation into two stages is common to improve safety by limiting the amount removed at any one surgery.

Pricing is hard to comment on without an examination but here in Richmond we have reasonable prices.

Subj: Re: liposuction

Hi,

I'd like to find out if wearing a tighter girdle gives better results. If so, is it going to cause blood clots?

Dr. Bermant responds:

We use different garments for different types of liposuction sculpture. Too tight a girdle can harm the blood supply to tissue and may even compress a vein that could cause a deep vein thrombosis (blood clot). Education about liposuction is best continued during an in office consultation and evaluation.

Subj: Re: Liposuction

I am 23 years old and have a four month old son. I am currently involved in getting a divorce from a man who called me "fat" and other names during my pregnancy. I gained over 40lbs (mostly fluid due to pre-eclampsia) and have since lost all of the weight. I am considering liposuction on my hips, stomach, and upper thighs. I am of fairly average weight and health, but my self esteem has been extinguished. My only concern is if I will be able to lift my son soon after surgery. Since I am his primary caregiver, it is essential that I am able to take care of him. I will have help for the first two days but after that I will be on my own. Is this a realistic possibility? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
C

Dr. Bermant responds:

Recovery after liposuction depends on how much surgery is performed. Small volume reductions have little difficulty after surgery and usually get around well shortly after surgery. Massive volume liposculpture require more time than the two days to readjust their fluids and a higher level of discomfort. Each patient handles her activity and pain differently. I would have to examine a patient to give advice specific to that patient's after surgery course. Your 2 days of help should be reasonable depending on how extensive the surgery is you are contemplating. Having a safety mechanism in place if you are not ready is always a better choice. That way you can relax and worry less about any surgery contemplated.

I hope this information proves of some use. If my office can be of further assistance, please let us know. We can be reached at: (804) 748-7737. My staff and I try to ensure the comfort of our out of town guests during their consultations and procedures.
